Dave Martin
Dave trained for his professional qualifications during a 5 year period working for one of the largest architect's practice in the UK, where he spent 2 years working alongside Tony on a variety of construction projects. Shortly after Tony set up his own practice, Dave joined up with Tony in 2008.
Dave has been instrumental in the development of the practice and assisted in driving forward into the self build sector.
What do you like most about your work? "The most enjoyable part of what we do, for me, is delivering to the client a solution that reaches beyond their brief. It is a challenge to be able to provide a beautiful home, within all the constraints of the project. I enjoy exploring unusual design solutions where it can be easy to accept a lesser, more obvious answer. Innovative answers to problems we are programmed to accept. We don't have to. The real challenge is understanding and knowing that the creative vision can be delivered in a practical and cost effective manner."
What would you like to change the most? "We often come across occasions where good design is under-valued. Good design can be judged in a number of ways, functionality, durability, use of light and space, visual appearance. Because of what we do and our experience, we know the true value of good design and what that contributes to the success of a project. I would like to see more importance placed on the design phase. Its like starting a sprint without warming up. The design stage is the preparation. If you don't get it right, the outcome will not be as good as it could have been."
What would you like to achieve in your field of work? "Over the last 10-20 years the role of the designer in construction projects would appear diluted, and the understanding of how builings go together and delivered been lost. Because of this the translation of the vision to delivery often fails. A designer with a greater understanding of the whole process, can deliver the vision, with high qauality design in a practical and efficient way. Final thought: Frank Lloyd Wright, designer and creator of some of the worlds greatest and well known buildings, was an Engineer."
